Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any plant-based milk, lukewarm)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup vegan butter (melted)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water (flax egg)
  • Neutral oil for frying (canola, vegetable, or grapeseed)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the flax egg by mixing ground flaxseed with water; let it thicken for 5-10 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine lukewarm almond milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let it froth for about 5-10 minutes.
  3. Add melted vegan butter, salt, vanilla extract, and the prepared flax egg into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in all-purpose flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place it in a greased bowl and cover; let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the risen dough to about ½-inch thick and cut out shapes using a doughnut cutter.
  6. Heat oil to about 350°F (175°C) and fry doughnuts until golden brown on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side).
  7. Allow them to cool slightly before dusting generously with sifted powdered sugar.
